The Airmen Against Drunk Driving are saving lives one ride at a time. The league of volunteers has potentially snatched 139 souls from the grip of the Grim Reaper in the first three months of 2007.
The program provides no-questions-asked rides for Airmen who have gone out and had too much to drink. By simply calling 987-AADD, a volunteer driver will be dispatched to pick up those too intoxicated to drive.
“There are still some military members who do not understand what the AADD program is all about and why it is in place,” said AADD president Tech. Sgt. Vandal Troutman.
“They unfortunately promote the fear that AADD will question beyond measure anyone who calls for a ride. The AADD representatives are supposed to ask to see your military ID card to make sure you are militarily affiliated,” he said. “The program is open to anyone with an authentic military ID card. The representative should not be looking at the ID for any pertinent information, not even the rider’s age.”
The drivers have one job — to get Airmen home safe and sound.
“I think the military public has the perception that they will be questioned or grilled by the driver about why their original plan failed and why they called AADD for a ride,” said Tech. Sgt. Sheri Masterson, AADD vice president. “AADD is a great program that is here for military members to use if their plan fails. Call us before putting yourself and others in danger by driving drunk.”
Sergeants Troutman and Masterson agree the AADD program shouldn’t be a substitute for a “Plan A,” but is should be remembered as a backup when even the best laid plan fails.
“We want people to use the program — when their plan fails; but, we would rather people plan out their evenings to get themselves and their buddies home,” said Sgt. Troutman.
“AADD is a great program that is here for military members to utilize if their plan fails," said Sgt. Masterson. "Call us before putting yourself and others in danger by driving drunk." One simple call is all it takes for even the most impaired Airmen to make the smart choice of calling AADD.
“It shouldn’t be a hard decision. If you know you are intoxicated and shouldn’t get behind the wheel just call or have someone call for you,” said. Tech. Sgt. Sheri Masterson.
“A DUI on the other hand costs time out of your day for about the next four weeks (including) changing the base DUI signs, regular trips to Wing Headquarters to meet with Winc commanders and your supervisor, relationships between you and your supervision and possibly jail time,” said Sergeant Troutman. “A DUI also risks your career, your life, and worse case scenario, the lives of those around you.”

The 314th Services Squadron Hangar 1080 project transforming the old PROPS lounge into PROPS Pro Shop is under way.
This week, furniture was relocated and the 314th Civil Engineering Squadron members removed bar sinks, coolers, capped water drain lines, and erected drywall. The only reminder of what the room was previously, will be the large C-130 props. The PROPS Pro Shop is expected to open its doors on May 15.
The new golf pro shop is not the only thing under renovation. Many golfers are excited about being able to play on all 18 holes of the newly renovated greens at Deer Run Golf Course.
“The golf course is in fine condition for this time of season due to the warmer temperatures this past March,” said Jeff Melton, Deer Run Golf Course Manager. “The back nine greens look very good and are putting nicely. We may be able to open play on all greens sooner than previously expected.”
Until that time, golfers are not falling short on golf events to tune up their game for summer. A two-person scramble tournament will be held April 21-22.
“All experience levels are welcome to play. The event will be flighted, which gives everyone an opportunity to win,” Mr. Melton said. Learn more about the game, by taking advantage of the golf lessons and clinics still available at the course.
A clinic catering to women will be conducted 5:30-6:30 p.m. April 23, 25 and 27. The cost is $10 for three hours of instruction.
“If you ever have been slightly interested in the game of golf, this is a fantastic time for you to learn. Simply call the Pro Shop at 987-6825,” said Mr. Jeff Melton.
Finally, the Duffer’s Inn last day of operation will be May 6. It will close in order to allow the staff to start training in Hangar 1080’s kitchen. Meals will be available at the new Hangar 1080 May 7. More details will be available in the coming weeks.

CAMP LEMONIER, Djibouti (AFNEWS) — Nothing is more anticipated in the military than the sound of “mail’s here.” Mail call is a service member’s lifeline, especially in such a remote area. But here in the Horn of Africa, the proverbial mailman has taken on quite a different look.
With more than 5,000 pounds of mail -- filling up two flatbed trucks -- twice a week, the postal center here takes on the frenzied look of the central facility of a major city. Postal specialists from all services join forces to unload, sort and deliver more than 2 tons of letters, packages and parts to Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen serving in dusty, remote locations such as Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan and Yemen.
Postal specialists from throughout the region resemble a choreographed routine, separating mail by organizations and location, where it is then locally distributed.
“Due to space limitations at the postal center, mail clerks must take their mail back to their unit for separation and distribution to offices and individuals,” said Army Staff Sgt. Leland Jones, a postal specialist with the Joint Task Force Horn of Africa Postal Center in Djibouti.
“I am a former Marine, and am a Soldier now, and there has never been a time during my military career where getting a letter from someone didn’t help,” Sergeant Jones said. “I know we’re in the electronic age, and e-mail helps tremendously, but every one of these letters and boxes that go to Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen will literally change their day.”
More than 1,500 military and civilians from every service make up JTF Horn of Africa, and support medical, nation-building and humanitarian assistance missions such as building schools, clinics and hospitals, and providing adequate drinking water and security training to help provide long-term stability within the region.
Logistics can be a challenge with service members spread out over such a large area, and getting the mail to men and women in remote locations can be just as difficult.
“Even in the tremendous heat, we work hard to make sure every piece of mail is sorted. One thing you don’t mess with is a Soldier’s mail,” Sergeant Jones said. “The other is their money. I get great satisfaction knowing that, at the end of the day we are going to see a lot of smiling faces around here. It lets us know that our mission has been accomplished and we can sleep easy at night.”

There is still time for Air Force members to show their “Commitment to Caring” and participate in the Air Force Assistance Fund Drive that ends April 13.
The base has already raised more than 120 percent of its monetary goal for the four charitable organizations benefiting active duty, Reserve, Air National Guard and retired Air Force people and their families, including surviving spouses and their families.
Every active duty member has the opportunity to contribute via a one-time cash donation or by initiating a payroll deduction plan. Reserve and Air National Guard personnel, as well as civilians, are welcome to contribute cash to the campaign.
If we achieve both the monetary goal and the 50 percent participation rate, the base receives up to $2,500 to benefit the base community.
The installation commander decides how these funds can best be used to benefit the community.
“It is up to every Airman to take care of other Airmen by participating in the Air Force Assistance Fund. Whether you donate only one dollar, it is taking care of our own,” said Brig Gen. Kip Self, 314th Airlift Wing commander. For more information, contact a squadron project officers or Maj. Elizabeth Clay at 425-6058.
