TOP STORY >> Super Foods: How they help the body

By Jeffrey Vaughn
19th Medical Group

Why do Super Foods work? Eating Super Foods can do four very important things in the body: they can decrease inflammation, can improve gut health, can increase antioxidants and could increase sulfur in the body. Here are four quick summaries talking about chronic systemic inflammation, gut health, antioxidants and the importance of eating sulfur-rich food.

Chronic Systemic Inflammation
Scientists believe chronic systemic inflammation in the body is the cause of many chronic diseases. If you can eliminate inflammation, you can eliminate the risk for the disease.

The cause of chronic systemic inflammation is directly linked to the food we eat and the main culprit is sugar and processed foods. The further you separate yourself from sugar and processed foods, the less inflammation you may experience.

In addition to eliminating sugar, adopting anti-inflammatory foods may reduce chronic systemic inflammation. Adding as many of these super foods such as whole grains, fatty fish and low-fat dairy to your diet as possible may help. Bottom line: eliminate foods with zero nutritional value and substitute foods that are high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.

Gut Health
The digestive system may be the most important system in the body. This system breaks down everything taken into the body and is programmed to decide what is released to the blood stream and what is flushed out as waste.

The digestive tract contains tight junctions and microvilli, similar to filters, in the intestinal wall. The intestinal wall cells break down food particles to decide what can enter the blood stream.

Leaky gut syndrome occurs when the tight junctions begin to open wide like a faucet and big undigested food particles and toxins flow freely into the blood stream.

The food particles and toxins are absorbed by tissue which causes chronic systemic inflammation and autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome and psoriasis.

Eating refined sugar, processed food, and products containing gluten can increase your risk for developing leaky gut syndrome. Inadequate amounts of stomach acid, too much bad gut bacteria or too little good gut bacteria may also play a role. Chronic stress can also lower immune health leading to leaky gut syndrome.

Correct leaky gut syndrome by eliminating the wrong foods and eating the right ones:

1. Eliminate foods high in sugar, processed foods, and foods that contain gluten.

2. Add fermented vegetables like Kim Chi, sauerkraut, kefir, yogurt or take a high quality multi-specie probiotic.

3. Eat super foods like sweet potatoes, onions and bananas that contain fermentable fiber.

4. Increase foods that contain Vitamin D and Zinc. Super foods high in Vitamin D include mushrooms, eggs, salmon and fish oil. Super foods high in Zinc include pumpkin seeds, squash grass fed beef and dark chocolate.

Antioxidants
The body undergoes oxidative stress every day and cells become damaged daily due to oxidation. When cells become damaged, they are called free radicals. Free radicals attack other cells to scavenge what they need for repair and end up damaging DNA.

When DNA is damaged, a chain reaction takes place where cells begin to replicate with damaged DNA. This sets the environment for diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc. The process is a natural part of life and the body has a built-in antioxidant mechanism that repairs most cells.

When external toxins such as cigarette smoke, pesticides and pharmaceuticals get into the mix, the body’s natural antioxidant mechanism can not keep up and it soon becomes overwhelmed. Antioxidants from the food we eat become the reinforcements the body needs to bring balance back at the cellular level.

Antioxidants come from almost all super foods, especially fruits and vegetables. The most important thing to remember are different antioxidants do different things. Vitamin C captures free radicals and neutralizes them. Vitamin E on the other hand repairs cells. The more variety of super foods you eat, the more types of antioxidants you introduce to the body and more antioxidant power is available for repair.

Foods high in antioxidants include dark green vegetables, blueberries, red berries, fish and sweet potatoes.

Sulfur Foods
Sulfur is so important because it offers detoxification which will remove the waste. It is a key player in removing waste. It makes cells more pliable allowing for better oxygen transport and waste removal. In addition, it also plays a major role in the creation of the most important antioxidant in the body: glutathione.

Glutathione plays a critical role in the production of insulin and maintaining healthy blood sugar. If you eat a healthy diet with super foods containing sulfur, your body will make plenty of glutathione and keep you healthy preventing diseases like heart disease, cancer or dementia.

Sulfur is extremely important if you have diabetes or want to prevent disease as it is the key to healthy cell growth and function.

Some examples of foods high in sulfur are eggs, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and legumes.

For more information on better nutrition, call the Health Prevention Flight at 501-987-7288.

TOP STORY >> Mr. Money invests in Airmen’s futures

By Airman Grace Nichols
19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

“Everybody wants to do a job where they can see customer satisfaction, and the only way I can see that is if I actually make a positive impact,” said Rick Tomaskovic, a Community Readiness Consultant at the Airman and Family Readiness Center.

Tomaskovic has served as the lead financial guru at the A&FRC since 2013 and has tirelessly toiled to help military members and their families reduce the financial difficulties they encounter.

With the combination of annual programs like the upcoming Military Saves Campaign from Feb. 22 through Feb. 26 and weekly financial classes offered at the A&FRC, the amount of Air Force Assistance Fund aid needed by military members has dropped by approximately 17 percent out of the usual four hundred cases a year.

That might not seem like a lot, but Tomaskovic said that it’s all about the process that was started with events like the Military Saves Campaign.

“The first year we started a conversation, the second year we added to that conversation and the third year is when we really started to see results,” said Tomaskovic. “We wouldn’t do any of this if we weren’t having an impact.”

Sharon Thompson, A&FRC chief, said Tomaskovic refined the process used to help military members and their families get needed basic financial insight.

“What Rick has done, the changes that we made and him continuing all year long on the education is what’s responsible (for the improvements),” said Thompson.

The A&FRC offers basic financial information and tools to help people improve their money woes.

“It’s that part of the campaign that drove the numbers down,” said Tomaskovic. “Programs like the Military Saves Campaign are all about that. It’s an awareness campaign: teaching people why they should set a budget, save for emergencies and things like that.”

Due to the efforts of Tomaskovic and the entire A&FRC staff, who work hard to hold events and programs promoting positive financial habits, clients with no financial difficulties have started to come in to take preemptive action to improve their money matters.

“I don’t want people to wait until something is broken before we fix it, I want people to know that they can take control of their finances and make a plan for their life that is going to work,” said Tomaskovic. “We have seen more people come in for things other than just a budget. People are beginning to realize that we are a resource they can use.”

Helping people develop good money habits and change their fortunes is very rewarding for Tomaskovic.

“Seeing someone come back and thanking us for helping them is the best thing,” he said. “That’s kind of it for me.”

For more information about A&FRC events and opportunities, call 987-2667.

The 2016 Scholarships for military children program is open! Students must submit applications to the base commissary no later than February 12, 2016. Details are available at www.militaryscholar.org/sfmc. A total of 700 scholarship grants, each for $2,000, will be awarded for school year 2016-17. In 2015, the Little Rock Commissary awarded 5 scholarships. Commissaries are an integral part of the quality of life offered to service members and their families. The Scholarships for Military Children Program was created in recognition of the contributions of military families to the readiness of the fighting force and to celebrate the role of the commissary in the military family community.  2015 tax requirements

For 2015, taxpayers are required to prove that they have obtained the minimum essential coverage, TRICARE qualifies for this coverage. Proof of coverage is the Department of Treasury Internal Revenue Service Form 1095: Employer Provided Health Insurance Offer and Coverage. TOP STORY >> 913th AG flies final legacy C-130 mission

By Master Sgt. Jeff Walston
913th Airlift Group

The final C-130H model mission for the 913th Airlift Group, Air Force Reserve, was flown from Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark., Jan. 28, 2016, with a C-130H aircrew comprised of both active-duty and Reserve personnel, reflecting the active association the 913th AG has maintained with the 19th Air Wing’s 50th Airlift Squadron.

From its modest beginnings in October 2010, as a 22nd Air Force Detachment One, the 913th AG has grown from two Airmen, to more than 800. The group’s personnel flew, maintained and supported the Air Force mission in 14 C-130H Hercules out of Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark. But no more.

“This flight means the mission for the 913th has officially changed from the “H” to the “J” model,” said Lt. Col. Keith Jasmin, chief of current operations for the 913th Operations Support Squadron. “We’ve been balancing both, but now, we transition to the J.”

The mission, which was a “standard training sortie” according to Jasmin, lasted about two hours and flew along the “White River Tour,” concentrating on low level air drop techniques and pilot proficiency training.

Many active and Reserve C-130H aircraft are being replaced by the C-130J Super Hercules, a comprehensive updated version with new engines, flight deck and other systems, all designed to improve performance and save money.

“There’s a big difference between the “H” and the “J” models,” said Master Sgt. Josh Burton, Standardization/Evaluation loadmaster, 327th Airlift Squadron. “The “J” is mostly computers, and almost all automated, where the legacy, or “H,” is all hands-on.”

The 913th AG still has two C-130H aircraft that are being prepared for transfer to other locations. Meanwhile, training for 913th AG personnel transitioning to the “J” model continues at the only formal training school for the “J” model, here at Little Rock AFB.

The transition to the “J” model requires maintainers, pilots, and loadmasters to complete conversion training. The formal schooling process should be completed by September 2016, but aircrews will continue to gain experience and proficiency for about another 18 months.

Due to all of these changes, the 913th AG will no longer be designated an “active association,” with their own Reserve aircraft, but a “classic association,” where they’ll work side by side with active duty Airmen on their aircraft.

Approximately 55 maintainers from the 50th Maintenance Squadron, who supported the active association, have already been moved back to the 19th Maintenance Group.

The 913th AG will be the first C-130J model classic association in the Air Force.

TOP STORY >> Military Saves promotes readiness, fiscal fitness

By Airman Grace Nichols

Those bummed out over missing on the billion dollar jackpot still have an opportunity to earn a plum prize.

Military Saves Week, an annual DOD-wide event focused on motivating and inspiring military members and their families to be financially aware, is set for February 22 to February 26.

The Airman and Family Readiness Center will host a number of events for Team Little Rock members to cash-in on the habit of saving money.

“It’s going to be fun,” said Rick Tomaskovic, a Community Readiness Consultant at the A&FRC.

The campaign will kick off with Team Little Rocks members filling out an online survey projected to be available February 10 until February 17. The squadron competition measures the fiscal intelligence of each member.

“The survey determines the financial IQ of each squadron, and no one wants to be last,” said Sharon Thompson, chief of the A&FRC, who added that after the survey, squadrons will pick teams of four to compete in the competition, a Financial Literacy Tournament during Military Saves Week.

Thompson and Tomaskovic said it’s important to see saving money as more than buttoned-up and boring charts and spreadsheets, they want people to know there is a fun side of finance.

Besides the competition, financial classes and practical information will be offered throughout the week.

Tomaskovic said that money is never boring, and to support his claim, an information fair will be held daily in the lobby from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. of the Walters Community Support Center, where representatives from various financial institutions and programs will be offering free financial information to military members and their families.

In addition, Team Little Rock members will have an opportunity to go online and take a pledge that states their savings goals in 2016.

“Every day, there are people on this base who cannot pay their rent, cannot buy for themselves or their families. They are good people; they are people that are going to work every day, and doing everything they’re supposed to do,” said Thompson. “But they don’t know about developing a budget or a spending plan; they don’t know how to make their money work for them.”

The goal is to teach people better financial habits so that saving money becomes more than a one-time thing.

“Fifty-five percent of people don’t save for anything. They just kind of live pay-day to pay-day; that’s a lot of things to not have planned for. Basically, the Military Saves Campaign is just about trying to create financial awareness,” said Tomaskovic, who added that this approach is the key to turning this dire financial situation around, yielding benefits for every week of the year.

The A&FRC staff hopes to make a lasting difference in the financial lives of military members and their families through the Military Saves Campaign.

“That’s why this campaign is so huge: It teaches people how to be successful; how to get what they want,” said Thompson. “Education is the key.”

For more information regarding the Military Saves Campaign, how to make a financial pledge, take the financial IQ survey and other A&FRC events, contact the A&FRC at (501) 987-2667.

TOP STORY >> LRAFB facilitates ride-sharing service options

By Senior Airman Harry Brexel
19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

With busy roads, packed parking lots and the need for a designated driver after a night out, it’s no wonder why ride-sharing services are growing more popular with young adults in the United States each day. Little Rock Air Force Base residents are no exception.

A growing number of companies provide taxi-like services and connect passengers to drivers via smart phone apps. Rides can be arranged in advance or often on short notice.

Opening Little Rock AFB to ride-sharing improves the quality of life for Airmen, especially those without vehicles.

“We want to make sure that it is known that the use of ride-sharing services is an option on the base,” said Maj. Gregory Bodenstein, 19th Security Forces Squadron commander. “Once the ride-sharing driver meets our requirements, moving on and off the installation will be seamless.”

For those new to the concept of ride-sharing, when a ride is requested, riders use a smartphone to contact nearby available drivers. When a driver in the company’s system accepts the ride, the customer can see their profile, which includes a name, headshot, make and model of their car, a photo of the car and the approximate time of arrival. Drivers then often call or text the requester when they arrive and customers hop in.

Reputable ridesharing companies require their drivers to undergo screening processes. Currently, Uber is the main alternative to standard taxi services in the Little Rock area. Arkansas Uber drivers must pass a background check, driving history check and ongoing quality controls.

Just like any visitor to the base, ride-share drivers must still provide a valid state driver’s license, proof of insurance and vehicle registration.  Security Forces will then conduct an identity and background check.

Once the background check is completed, drivers have three ways obtain a pass to access the installation, according to Jeffery Bardsley, 19th Security Force Squadron plans and programs section chief.

1. Service members must come to the visitor center with their military ID to sponsor drivers in order to obtain a pass to access the base one time.

2. Service members can e-mail the Little Rock AFB Visitor Center from their military e-mail address instead of meeting the drivers at the visitor center building to obtain a pass to access the base one time.

3. Or, ride-share drivers can obtain a long-term pass good for up to one year.  In order to qualify for a long-term pass, ride-share drivers must present proof of their employment by a ride-sharing service.  If interested in a long-term pass, ride share drivers should call the 19th Security Forces Squadron Pass and Registration Section at (501)987-6338.

For more information on ride-share access to base, call (501) 987-6294.
