TOP STORY >> Hooray for Earth Day

By Senior Airman Regina Edwards
19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The 45th anniversary of Earth Day blossomed at Arnold Drive Elementary School on Wednesday.

The school invited 5th and 6th graders from Jacksonville Lighthouse Charter School: Flightline Upper Academy and homeschool children to participate in learning about threatened and endangered animals as well as other environmental concerns.

“It’s important to recognize Earth Day because I think a lot of times we take the earth and what we have for granted,” said James Popham, the 19th Civil Engineer Squadron natural resources manager. “This is a good time for people to volunteer and reach out a little around base to build and strengthen our natural environment.”

Throughout the day, children in Pre-K-6th grades, walked through a nature trail, stopping at several exhibits where they learned about the Monarch Butterfly, Nutria, preserving water and taking care of the earth to name a few.

Sparky the Fire Dog and McGruff the Crime Dog were in attendance to take pictures and educate the children about safety.

Team Little Rock Airmen also showed their appreciation throughout the week by planting and grooming in areas around the base, increasing not only its beauty, but the pride they have for their installation.

TOP STORY >> Exceptional Airman wins AF honor

By Senior Airman Harry Brexel
19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Each year the Lt. Gen. Leo Marquez Award is given to an outstanding Air Force maintenance individual who demonstrates exceptional job performance, efficiency, knowledge and Airmanship.

The award is highly sought after in the maintenance community. From executing day-to-day operations, to exceeding standards in the workplace and off-duty, the Marquez Award portrays exceptional dedication to the mission and the Air Force.

Tech. Sgt. Eric Sims, a 314th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron hydraulic systems craftsman, received the 2014 Marquez Award. Sims rose above the ranks by performing above and beyond his duties.

Sims proved himself to be an excellent aircraft hydraulic systems specialist by solving issues with landing gears, brakes, flight controls, cargo door systems and more. He created innovative ideas which averted potential aircraft damage and ensured the safety of C-130 aircrews.

Along with excellent job performance, Sims coached a local community’s youth soccer team and helped Airmen improve fitness scores through becoming a certified cross-fit instructor and physical training leader.

Sims attributes his successes to his peers and mentors.

“I couldn’t have done it without the guidance and support of Master Sgt. George Terrell [the 314th Maintenance Group plans and programs noncommissioned officer in charge], and the teamwork of the hydraulic shop, especially Staff Sgt. Tyler Mitsuyasu [a 314th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron hydraulic systems craftsman],” said Sims.

Sims has worked 13 years to master his craft. Now that he has been recognized as best of the best, he plans to pass on his skills to younger Airmen.

“I’m excited about the award,” Sims said. “I look forward to teaching the less experienced Airmen everything I know.”

TOP STORY >> Little Rock Maintenance Team helps strengthen ally

By Capt. Steve Massara
Don Muang Air Base, Bangkok, Thailand

Under clear blue skies, sunshine and temperatures in the 90s, three Team Little Rock maintainers from the 373rd Training Squadron Detachment 4 embarked on their two-week training partnership with the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) in Bangkok, Thailand.

The C-130 Mobile Training Team (MTT) of Tech. Sgt. Erik Ruppert, Staff Sgt. Chase Honeycutt and Staff Sgt. Jeremy Burkey trekked more than 10,000 miles across the globe in order to help a long-time C-130 partner enhance their maintenance capabilities through focused aircraft rigging training.

The instruction brought together C-130 maintainers from both the RTAF airframe specialty and from Thai Aviation Industries (TAI), a semi-state owned business responsible for RTAF depot-level maintenance tasks. To meet this training need, Honeycutt and Burkey conducted two classes in tandem instructing more than 20 RTAF and TAI maintainers for 10 days.

“It was a humbling experience to be part of this MTT and to help foster the relationship between the U.S. and Thailand,” said Burkey. “The RTAF and TAI maintainers are very mechanically inclined and took well to our training.”

Record floods struck Bangkok in 2011, destroying and damaging much of the maintenance infrastructure and support equipment at Don Muang Air Base, home of the RTAF’s only C-130 base.  Without proper tools or equipment, the RTAF had a difficult time maintaining its fleet of 12 C-130H aircraft.  In concert with the reacquisition of maintenance tools and equipment, a nine-member Team Little Rock MTT visited February 2013, helping to provide broad-based training on engines, electrics, hydraulics and airframe components to more than 100 RTAF maintainers.

The incorporation of formalized training, helped the C-130H fleet’s fully mission capable rate rise more than 50 percent over the past two years. Recognizing the value of the 2013 visit funded through Foreign Military Financing funds from the U.S. State Department, the RTAF chose to invest in future training.  To this end, Air Force Security Assistance and Training, Joint U.S. Military Advisory Group Thailand, and the Military Personnel Exchange Program provided the RTAF with the means to achieve their training goals.

This year, the RTAF requested focused training specifically for aircraft rigging. The training included aircraft doors, landing gear, cargo ramp, flight controls, steering and engine systems.

“It was awesome to be able to use our experiences to help the RTAF extend aircraft service life and reduce re-occurring issues while improving mission readiness and our relations,” Honeycutt said.

Beyond the friendships established, enhancing interoperability and the capacity to maintain Thailand’s only tactical military airlift capability remains essential for missions such as transporting and responding to regional humanitarian assistance and disaster relief in the Asia-Pacific theater.

The training at Don Muang Air Base was more intensive this year and included the full jacking of an aircraft in order to rig the nose and main landing gear.  The hands-on practical training combined with classroom instruction, facilitated through two interpreters, ensured each Thai maintainer understood all materials and was able to ask detailed questions.

After more than 80 hours of instruction, both teams were excited to have completed the learning objectives and celebrate the many years of sustained partnership between the United States and Thailand.

“This year’s follow-up training was very helpful in bringing rigging experience to our unit, and we look forward to continued relations and training in the future,” said Squadron Leader Natchanon Wongwenai, the RTAF 601 Chief of Maintenance.

TOP STORY >> KUDOS: Helping children handle deployments

By Airman 1st Class Harry Brexel
19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The Airman and Family Readiness Center sponsored its fourth annual Kids Understanding Deployment Operations event April 11 at Little Rock Air Force Base. Approximately 300 members of Team Little Rock participated in the event where multiple squadrons set up booths demonstrating common Air Force deployment activities to children.

The purpose of KUDOS is to inform children about the deployment processes their parents go through each time they head down range. The event also helps lessen anxiety that children may have during a parent’s deployment.

The event displayed activities that security forces, fire department, and personnelists perform.  Children also toured the inside of a C-130 and operated an explosive ordnance disposal robot.

Children practiced shooting at a Nerf gun firing range and saw an interactive parachute exhibit sponsored by the 19th Operation Support Squadron Aircrew Flight Equipment flight.

Kirstyn, 11, said the event helped her understand what happens on deployments.

“My favorite part was getting on top of the Humvee, behind the gun,” she said.

Among other displays, the chapel, finance, medical group, legal office and Airman and Family Readiness Center assisted the children through an age appropriate version of the out-processing checklist.

“KUDOS has shown that it can help put children more at ease, even if a little, when their parents have to deploy,” said Master Sgt. Kimberly Euton, the 19th Force Support Squadron Airman and Family Readiness Center noncommissioned officer in charge.

“The event helps children know what their parents experience during the deployment process and down range, at a level they understand,” said Euton.

Volunteers also gained insight from the event.

“It is so much fun to play with the kids and see Airmen connect with the children,” said Senior Airman Kelsey Cook, a 19th Aerospace Maintenance Squadron support staff technician. “It’s really rewarding.”

At the end of the day, Airmen and their children walked away from the event more informed. Parents said that KUDOS contributed in preparing their children for future deployments.

TOP STORY >> Boots to Business

By Airman 1st Class Scott Poe
19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The Boots to Business program is for those who want entrepreneurial education and training for exploring business ownership or other self-employment opportunities.

The program is typically introduced during the transition assistance program as a post-service career option for service members and their spouses, however, people can take advantage of the program prior to TAP.

The two-day course focuses on the many opportunities and challenges of business ownership.

“The greatest thing most people get from taking the two-day course is a greater understanding of the resources available to them,” said Edward Haddock, Northwest Arkansas U.S. Small Business Administration senior area manager. “These help in evaluating their business ideas and an overview of the entrepreneurial process from experienced business coaches and trainers.”

Tech. Sgt. Elizabeth Witt, a 19th Logistics Readiness Squadron noncommissioned officer-in-charge of cargo movements, learned about starting up her own business.

“The class provided so much information on all the ins and outs to starting up your own business,” said Witt. “It was an eye-opener for me to see how small business loans actually work.”

The next classes are slated for June 29-30 and again Sept. 28-29, 2015. For questions or to sign up for the classes, call the Airmen and Family Readiness Center at 501-987-6801 and check the Boots to Business website; www.sba.gov/bootstobusiness

“I would highly recommend this class to anyone who has a desire to start up their own business,” said Witt. “There are a lot of details for just the general person, who hasn’t had the opportunity to sit down for hours on end, to research the whole process of starting/owning your own business.”

TOP STORY >> Doolittle Raider, Lt. Col. Robert Hite, is buried with military honors

By 1st Lt. Amanda Farr
19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Doolittle Raider Lt. Col. Robert Hite was buried with military honors April 2 in Camden after a funeral service in his home church.

Hite was among 80 men who took part in the famous World War II Doolittle Toyko Raid in April 1942. Hite, 95, died March 29 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Family and friends began the commemoration of Hite’s life at Saint John’s Episcopal Church with a traditional funeral service. They departed the church for a gravesite service at Memorial Park Cemetery in Camden.

Hite was given a hero’s escort from the church to the cemetery, as Maul Road was lined with community members waving American flags as the procession passed.

Before remarks from the reverend at the cemetery, the service opened with flyover by a B-1 from the 37th Bomb Squadron at Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota.

The Little Rock Air Force Base Honor Guard led the gravesite service and performed a flag-folding ceremony, three-volley gun salute and presented three polished rounds to Hite’s son, Wallace Hite.

The service culminated with the playing of “Taps” followed by a heritage flyover including a B-25 and three P-40 aircraft.

During the Doolittle Raid mission, led by then Col. Jimmy Doolittle, Hite was the co-pilot on plane 16, a B-25 dubbed the “Bat Out of Hell.” After the bombing runs, Hite’s crew was forced to bailout because of low fuel. Hite landed in a rice paddy and was captured by the Japanese.  He was one of eight men captured by the Japanese, and he was held as a prisoner of war for 40 months before he was liberated Aug. 20, 1945.

A small delegation from Little Rock AFB, about two hours from Camden, attended the event to offer condolences to his family and render respect to Hite and the Doolittle Raiders’ legacy.

“The loss of Lt. Col. Hite was felt across our nation, as we also lost a member of our military family,” said Col. Patrick Rhatigan, 19th Airlift Wing and installation commander. “The entire Team Little Rock community shares in the sorrow felt by his loved ones.”

One distinguished guest included Lt. Col. Richard “Dick” Cole, fellow Doolittle Raider, who joined family and friends to honor his comrade. With Hite’s passing, Cole and Staff Sgt. David Thatcher remain the only two surviving Raiders.

The Doolittle Raiders will be honored with the Congressional Gold Medal in a ceremony April 15 in Washington D.C, then present it April 18 - the 73rd anniversary of the raid - to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio.

The medal will be displayed as part of a larger Raiders exhibit in the museum.

“I was humbled to attend the service of Lt. Col. Hite,” said Rhatigan. “He helped lay the foundation for our great Air Force. It was simply a privilege to join his family and friends to remember, celebrate and honor an incredible American hero.”

After Hite’s passing, his son Wallace told the Associated Press his father would want to be remembered for his patriotism, and for others to share the same sentiment.

“I think he would want two things: that’s the attitude we ought to have about our country; and the second is, he was just doing his job.”

TOP STORY >> Blisters for Bataan

By Airman 1st Class Scott Poe
19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Editor’s note: This is a follow-up to the Training for the Bataan Death March article that was published March 20, 2015.

The sun slowly showed itself over the horizon and revealed the breathtaking mountains to the west at White Sand Missile Range, New Mexico. More than 5,600 military members, civilians, volunteers and veterans gathered March 22, to take part in the 26th Annual Bataan Memorial Death March.

The day before the march, participants were able to meet World War II survivors, specifically those who endured the brutal Bataan Death March.

The Bataan Death March was a forced transfer of Filipino and U.S. prisoners of war. They marched more than 60 miles without food or water. Those who fell behind were shot, beaten or bayonetted.

It was an honor to meet these heroes and to hear their stories of survival. One of them said every day he wasn’t in a POW camp, was a good day.

We started our 26.2-mile trek around the missile range. At mile four, there were people already tending to their feet, myself included. I could feel blisters already forming on the heels of my feet. As I applied moleskin to my feet, I kept thinking about the POWs who had nothing but the boots on their feet and clothes on their back. I had water, food, Aleve, good boots and socks, sunblock and I was not going to get shot or stabbed with a bayonet if I fell behind.

Knowing what the POWs had gone through, I tried to keep my complaining to a minimum, and I learned to “embrace the suck.” Eventually numbness overtook the pain in my feet, but I needed to keep moving forward.

The miles went by fast at first, but slowly they seemed to get longer. I wasn’t traversing the trails by myself though. I had an awesome team that kept each other motivated and moving along the route. There were three teams from Little Rock Air Force Base, a military co-ed team, a military team (which I was on) and a civilian team. As we made our way through the sand and rocks, casual conversation helped pass the time. Toward the end of our marathon, the conversations slowly died down as fatigue set in.

The co-ed military team finished in 3rd place in their category at 7:17.49 seconds. The military team finished in 8th place with a time of 8:30.01 and the civilian team finished right behind them at 8:38.47 finishing in 6th place in their category.

Making it to the finish line was a relief and an accomplishment, but it was not the highlight of my journey. The greatest part of my experience was meeting the Death March’s survivors and getting to better know my brothers and sisters from the 19th Logistics Readiness Squadron.

I would urge everyone, if you have the opportunity, to go and experience this humbling event. Your feet may hurt and your legs and body may be sore, but the pain is temporary; the memories are forever.

TOP STORY >> Getting up to speed on tornado safety

By Senior Airman Stephanie Serrano
19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

It’s 5 a.m. and what starts out as a deep low siren begins to climb higher into a loud three-to-five minute wailing steady tone.

For many Arkansas residents, the tornado siren is a familiar sound; some people will ignore it and others will not know what to do.

Tornado season is upon Central Arkansas yet again.

The base is not immune from severe weather. The aftermath of the April 2011 EF-2 tornado that ripped through the base left more than 100 on-base houses destroyed, three C-130 aircraft inoperative and buildings along the flight line damaged. Likewise, the devastating EF-4 tornado in April 2014, killed approximately 15 people in Vilonia, injured dozens more and destroyed multiple homes.

Tornadoes can appear in the blink of an eye, and everyone needs to be prepared, have a plan and stay safe.

“Whether a person has been around tornados their whole life or you are new to them, preparation is still very crucial,” said Rick Myers, 19th Airlift Wing safety manager. “Practice drills frequently, especially if you have children; that way, everyone knows what to do.”

Something many people confuse is the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning. A tornado watch means there are possibilities of a tornado; continue to remain alert. A tornado warning, on the other hand, means a tornado has been indicated by the weather radar system or visibly sighted.

Once the sirens sound, seek shelter immediately.

“Stay informed about the weather as much as possible.  If a tornado warning is underway, go to the innermost part of the structure to take cover,” Myers said.

Before the storm, everyone should be prepared and know what to do in the event of a tornado.

One way to be prepared is to have a weather kit, which should include water, food, flashlights and a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather radio. This will help ensure you can stay informed about the weather if there is a possible power outage.

Always remember to develop a plan for the safety of you and your family.

The best places to take cover are in a bathroom or basement. Stay away from windows and always stay indoors.

If you are caught outdoors or perhaps in your car, get out and find the closest ditch or lowest point to take cover in. Stay away from overpasses if possible, which is an easy place to be swept up by the tornado. Never try to outrun a tornado in your car.

There are many different ways to stay updated on the weather such as weather alert apps, radios and TVs. It’s also important to update your AtHoc notification system to receive updates straight to your phone about what’s going on, on base.
