It was graduation night and excitement was in the air as 21 Airmen and spouses joined the Financial Peace University legacy as graduates on Little Rock AFB. This group marks the fifth class held on the base since the first class in March of 2005.
Financial Peace University is a faith-based full-spectrum approach to financial management. As one of the graduates put it in a nutshell, “It’s made me put together a plan on how my money will be saved and distributed instead of spending it blindly. It covers everything from A-Z having to do with money.”
This class achieved remarkable results by saving a total of $16,400 in just 90 days. They also paid off $38,893 of debt owed in the same period and destroyed 55 credit cards. As one other classmate put it, “I now have a can-do attitude and plan about how to get out of debt and I’m doing it. I will not fail.”
The results are even more phenomenal when you look at all five classes combined with 90 total graduates on Little Rock, $121,809 saved, and $197,780 debt paid off during the 90 days of class. Most have continued on to get out of debt completely. Financial conflict has been shown to be the number 1 cause of divorce in this country and Financial Peace University is having an impact on Little Rock marriages. When asked, how has the 13-week FPU class personally impacted your marriage, one couple said, “Now we can speak openly about money with each other and it has allowed us to get on the same page financially.”
The next Financial Peace class will be offered at the Base Chapel beginning at 6 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Chapel Annex.
Orientation sessions will be offered at the Base Chapel at 6 p.m. Jan. 30 and Feb. 6. Cost of the class is $20 E1-E4 or $50 for E5-Up and civilians. UAMS hosts Iraq War photo exhibit
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health is hosting a traveling photo exhibit Jan. 30 to Feb. 15 to raise awareness of the Iraq war’s impact on public health.
Titled “Unembedded,” the 60-photograph exhibit is by four photojournalists – including Thorne Anderson, a Cabot High School graduate – whose rare access to everyday Iraqis allowed the photographers to capture provocative images without accompanying the U.S. military.
The exhibit is free and will be displayed on the first floor of the College of Public Health building. It can be viewed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 10-11. The exhibit also will appear at Philander Smith College in Little Rock, displayed in the Library and Technology Center from Feb. 20 to March 9.

Officials unveiled Phase Two of the 314th Medical Group’s multi-million renovation project this week, when several new offices opened.
The $3.7 million renovation project focused on updating the women’s health, family practice, pediatric, immunization and physical health assessment clinics, and building a new records storage area, check-in desk and appointment desk.
Although the immunization and women’s health clinics will not open until next week, officials are excited about the new look and outcome of the facility.
“The modernization allowed us to redesign the layout of many sections to better take care of our patients,” said 2nd Lt. Christy Snow, 314th Medical Group. “The co-location of the main reception desk with the records and appointment line will allow for better response times and more efficient use of manpower.”
Another major improvement comes from combining the two family practice areas into one office, said Lieutenant Snow. Before the renovation, one office was located on the first floor near the pharmacy; the other was on the second floor near life skills. Now, both are together.
“We hope these changes will make patients’ visits to the clinic a more comfortable experience,” said the lieutenant. More than $385,000 was spent on new furniture for the areas, and thousands were spent on new examination tables in the family practice and pediatric clinics.
In mid-June or early July, officials plan to begin remodeling the dental clinic.
“Not to worry,” said Lieutenant Snow, “will still see patients.”
“Overall, the renovations have updated the functionality and look of the clinic,” said Lt. Col. John Powers, 314th Medical Support Squadron commander. “We appreciate everyone’s patience during the renovations and we look forward to serving the military family from our new, state-of-the-art clinic.”

Recently, the Base Honor Guard performed military honors at my father’s funeral. My family and I were very impressed and are very grateful for their services that day.
The Honor Guard traveled several hours each way to get to the National Cemetery in Fayetteville. They were in perfect form in a strong cold wind. Please pass along to them my thanks. It did my heart good to see so many Maintenance Badges on their uniforms.

DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. (AFNEWS) — As we enter 2007, we are going to face a new year with a world and an Air Force that needs your talents, dedication and professionalism to accomplish our often difficult and diverse missions.
Usually at this time of the year, many people are talking about their New Year's resolutions and the goals they set for themselves for the coming year. Goals in life and in your career are extremely important, but they must be realistic and attainable if you are going to be able to meet them.
Like David Letterman, I want to offer my advice on the "Top 10 New Year's Resolutions" for all Airmen.
Be fit to fight
The evidence is in for fitness. Regular exercise has been associated with more health benefits than anything else known to man. Being in the military makes this even more important. We must be prepared to enter the fray at a moment's notice. Dedicate yourselves to exercise a minimum of three times a week and then do it. You will feel better, perform at higher efficiency and reduce your health risks that come with age.
Study for that next promotion
We all talk about it, but many do not crack the books until weeks before their promotion test. Develop a study plan and then stick to it with dedication. Our Promotion Fitness Examinations demand a complete understanding of the material that only comes from a dedicated study regimen. Dedicate 30 minutes every day to study for your next stripe and begin at least six to eight months before your test date. Make studying a part of your routine.
Reduce your debt
Was money a big source of stress in your life last year? Get a handle on your finances. Save more money; spend less with credit. Enroll in a retirement savings account like the Thrift Savings Plan now. The military expects all Airmen to manage their finances in such a way as to not bring discredit to themselves or the service.
Help others and get involved
A popular, non-selfish New Year's resolution — volunteerism — can take many forms in the military. Whether you choose to spend time helping at the Airman's Attic, joining a booster club or local private organization, there are many volunteer organizations both on and off the installation that can really use your help.
Spend more time with family and friends
Recent polls show that more than 50 percent of Americans vow to appreciate loved ones and spend more time with family and friends this year. In the military, our time away from family and friends is often magnified by required deployments and temporary duties. Make the most of your time at home and with loved ones and never forget they are an integral part of your Air Force journey.
Learn something new
Have you ever vowed to do something you always wanted to do, but never got around to it? Perhaps it is learning a new language, taking a college class, getting your Community College of the Air Force Degree, reading a book from the Air Force chief of staff's reading list or taking that Lean class. Whether it's upgrade training or your Career Development Courses, you'll find education is one of the easiest, most motivating New Year's resolutions to keep. Challenge your mind in the coming year, and your horizons will expand.
Be a mentor
Take the time to take someone under your wing and teach them the ropes of being a good Airman. Be the role model you always wanted. Train someone to someday take your place and fulfill your duties and responsibilities.
Improve your attitude
Make your choice for the coming year to have a positive attitude and not a negative one. You have complete control over this. You can think of lots of reasons for a negative attitude -- "I'm not a morning person," "I don't like this place," "My supervisor is mean," etc.
Get over it! I think that's a cop-out for choosing a negative attitude. You control how you feel and how you react and your attitude affects those all around you.
Choose to be positive and be thankful for what you have!
Make a culture of responsible choices in all you do
Probably the most popular of all New Year's resolutions after losing weight is to quit drinking and smoking. I won't go into the obvious health risks associated with these activities — we all should know their dangers.
However, I will ask everyone to consider making responsible choices in everything you do this year. Consider the possible pitfalls of over-indulging in any situation. I've seen too many Air Force careers ruined by one night of binge drinking or any other risk-associated behaviors that are not thought out properly.
Enjoy life more
Given the hectic, stressful lifestyle of our Air Force, it is no wonder that enjoying life more has become a popular resolution in recent years. Take time to enjoy your successes and enjoy everything and everyone around you.
We are in the greatest air and space force in the world and we should all be proud of our contributions to peace and freedom all over the world!

SAN ANTONIO – Airmen will soon see a block on performance reports indicating how well they meet fitness standards.
Lt. Gen. Roger Brady, deputy chief of staff for manpower and personnel on the Air Staff, told Air Force Times on Friday that the change is coming soon, but he didn’t know an exact date.
The change is another step in the effort to improve the overall fitness of the force, General Brady said.

More than ten 314th Logistics Readiness Squadron Airmen are taking time Saturday to provide deployed or deploying Airmen and their spouses with free car inspections.
Base vehicle maintenance technicians are inspecting vehicles 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the auto hobby shop (Bldg. 450) Saturday to help Airmen’s families have a little peace of mind while their sponsors are deployed.
“Providing Airman-to-Airman support is a big deal to our ‘loggie’ troops,” said Lt. Col. Rhonda Soto, 314th Logistics Readiness Squadron commander. “I’m extremely proud of the way our folks have stepped up to provide this free service to Airmen and their families.”
Vehicle inspections will include, but are not limited to checking: lights, fluids, brake systems, tires, exhaust and other safety-related items.
The same inspection at a local automotive repair shop would cost around $19.95 plus tax.
The inspection will allow Airmen poised to deploy or their spouses to bring in their primary vehicle to undergo the multi-point inspection. The squadron’s vehicle maintenance technicians are ASE certified, and will provide written documentation listing vehicle problems, said Tech. Sgt. Brian Huffman, 314th LRS general purpose vehicle maintenance NCO in charge.
“During the 10-15 minute inspection, we will be available to answer questions and give repair options to Airmen or their family member,” said Sergeant Huffman, who spearheaded the project. “Although we will not perform maintenance or repairs on the vehicle, we will give them all the data they need to feel comfortable taking their vehicle to a repair shop and know what needs to be fixed.
“Peace of mind is important when it comes to vehicle repairs,” said Sergeant Huffman, “because people are always on guard when it comes to trusting repair shops. Since this is a no-profit service done by our own Airmen, you know you can trust the findings.”
Knowing what’s wrong with a vehicle prior to taking it in to a repair shop could cut down on repair costs, said Colonel Soto. Plus, since the service is provided under the “wingman concept,” customers can trust the quality of work.
“The idea of a fair assessment before going downtown makes you feel comfortable — like you know how to handle your business,” said Colonel Soto.
“You have the ammunition to say, ‘This is what’s wrong; how much will it cost to fix it?’”
Another car inspection will be held Feb. 3 at the hobby shop.

What would you do if you had an hour to live? Truth be told, I’m so indecisive that I would probably still be thinking about it as my life ended. As it turns out, there is at least one hired killer who knew exactly what he wanted to do with his last moments on Earth. After carrying out his latest job, assassin Chev Chelio gets the unfortunate news that he has been injected with a poison that will kill him if his heart rate drops too low. With that tidbit of info, an adrenaline-filled mission of vengeance erupts that hardly stops to take a breath.
As with most action films, I tempered my expectations for acting performance, and rightly so. Jason Statham is charming but unimpressive as our hero hitman. Amy Smart also peeks in halfway through in a distractingly meaningless role as Chev’s girlfriend and doesn’t bring much to the screen.
‘Crank’ presents us with some interesting plot ideas and cinematography; even though I believe it was all handled somewhat clumsily. The idea of a poison that doesn’t allow you to slow down has gobs of potential, and it’s unfortunate that this film mostly squandered it.
I did laugh a bit more than I would have expected, and some of the scenes were fun to watch, but it did little to quell my largest complaint: We saw nothing new. While the premise was fresh, the action sequences were surprisingly bland and ultimately uncreative.
After films like ‘Die Hard,’ ‘Terminator 2,’ and ‘The Matrix,’ any halfway discerning action fan will require more than 90 minutes of a juiced-up hitman running through city streets killing people, stopping only to spend some frustrating quality time with his new girlfriend.
I had hardly heard of this film when I noticed it was being released last week. That always helps since it eliminates any chance for me to form a preconception about it. It’s a good thing I didn’t, because I might have been even more disappointed.

HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. (AFNEWS) — Americans observed what would have been the 78th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Monday.
Had Dr. King lived 78 years, one can only imagine the additional contributions he would have made to our country and society.
Sadly and tragically, his life was cut short by an assassin’s bullet April 4, 1968, and we lost the youngest person ever to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He earned it for his work as a peacemaker, promoting nonviolence and equal treatment.
As a tribute to Dr. King, I hope we all take at least a few minutes to reflect on Dr. King’s message and then spend some more time thinking about what we can do to spread his message as we go about our daily routines.
It may be as simple as telling our children about Dr. King or as significant as giving a commanders call briefing on the importance of respect for others, the positive power of diversity and the need for equal treatment.
For Air Force members — civilian and military — Dr. King’s message of respect for others is an essential cornerstone to our three core values: integrity first, service before self, excellence in all we do.
That’s why the Air Force promotes an environment free from personal, social or institutional barriers that prevent Air Force members from rising to the highest level of responsibility possible. This type of environment starts with respect for every member of the Air Force team regardless of race, color, national origin, religion or gender.
Dr. King’s famous statement, “I have a dream that one day ... sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood,” is really one way of depicting an environment of mutual respect and appreciation.
A phrase that you’ve probably heard uttered by numerous Air Force leaders is, “People are our most valuable asset.” This statement is very true. It isn’t the aircraft or the weapon systems that accomplish a mission — it’s the people.
Each person has a tremendous amount to offer to the Air Force, but if they are weighted down by the barrier of disrespect, they cannot reach their full potential.
Respecting each other regardless of differences and recognizing the valuable role each member of our military family plays are imperative.
In the 78 years since Dr. King was born, much has changed in both the world and the military, but the fundamental need to respect others remains constant. On Monday, we pay tribute to Dr. King — his courage, his leadership and his message. What a great reminder that we all play a vital role in the world’s greatest Air Force and we all deserve the respect that Dr. King so aggressively sought for all people.

FORT LEE, Va. — Gas prices are biting into the family budget, interest rates are rising, and college tuition is outpacing inflation. At least some relief is in sight for military families as the Scholarships for Military Children program opens for 2007.
Applications for the $1,500 scholarships are available at 264 commissaries worldwide, or can be downloaded through links at www.commissaries.com, www.militaryscholar.org or www.dodea.edu.
“Scholarships for Military Children is a wonderful military community program,” said Patrick Nixon, DeCA director and chief executive officer. “Nearly 3,000 scholarships totaling over $4 million have been awarded since the first awards were given in 2001.”
The $1,500 scholarships are available for children of military active-duty, retired, and Guard and Reserve service members.
Most of the funds are donated by manufacturers, brokers and suppliers selling groceries in commissaries, and every dollar donated to the program by industry or the general public goes to fund the scholarships.
The program is administered by the Fisher House Foundation.
A significant number of scholarships, about 10 percent every year, go to high school students at DoD schools overseas.
“Every cent that community organizations can mobilize to support college-bound students is an investment in the future,” said Joseph Tafoya, director of the Department of Defense Education Activity.
“With college costs soaring, our DoD students and their parents appreciate every available scholarship to help defray the cost, and the scholarships enable many of our families to better afford the tuition and provide an incentive for students to work hard,” said Tafoya. “They also demonstrate that military communities are committed to education and increased opportunities for all students.”
The scholarship program has also made inroads to increasing support from the “nonmilitary” community.
California high school students sponsoring golf tournaments in 2006 raised thousands of dollars to donate to the program, and already for 2007, a private foundation has made a substantial donation.
“We’re excited to see this worthwhile program gaining recognition and funding from the community at large, said Jim Weiskopf, vice president of communications at Fisher House Foundation. “Commissary industry support has been amazing and increased public support can only help ensure that the Scholarships for Military Children program continues to benefit the military community for many years to come.”

BALAD AIR BASE, Iraq (AFNEWS) — Whether it’s operating from rough dirt strips or dropping off troops and equipment into hostile areas, C-130 Hercules keep convoys off the road in Iraq through airpower.
Members of the 777th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron deployed from Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark., fly C-130 hub-and-spoke missions daily to ensure cargo and passengers are delivered in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
“Each pallet contains something different. We’ve delivered anything from MREs (meals ready to eat) and water to tires and ammo,” said Capt. Matt Reece, aircraft commander.
The missions are based on needs of various locations throughout the area of responsibility and provide supplies to all branches of the military.
“We ensure bases have what they need. The most important impact of our mission is that people stay off the roads here,” Captain Reece said. He also said the tactical airlift saves time and additional effort. For instance, in one week, C-130 operations can reduce convoy requirements by airlifting the equivalent of cargo carried by more than 22 buses and 42 trucks.
“If we can take two or three trucks off the road each time, then it’s worth it. There’s definitely less risk with flying,” said Senior Airman Michael Buzbee, loadmaster.
One particular mission included transporting members of the 524th Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Unit to Kirkuk Regional Air Base, so maintainers could provide support for fighter operations there.
“This is our only mode of transportation. This helps keep the aircraft operational. The sheer number of hub-and-spoke missions enable us to get there on time,” said 1st Lt. Kate Stowe, assistant AMU officer in charge deployed from Luke Air Force Base, Ariz.
The challenge with the hub-and-spoke missions has to do with the amount of time the crew has from start to finish, said Capt. Kenny Bierman, navigator.
“The time we take off to the time we land is usually around 12 hours,” Captain Bierman said. “That’s how much time we have to get everything done. We have to be flexible with all the different possibilities of delays.”

The Air Mobility Command deputy director of Air, Space and Information Operations shared a safety message with Little Rock AFB Airmen Jan. 11 on the recent number of worldwide Class A mishaps.
Brig. Gen. Frederick Roggero stated in his aircrew call that in the last 16 months, five aircrews were involved in Class A mishaps, luckily with no fatalities.
The general warned, “Although this was the Air Force’s safest year (as a whole), it was AMC’s luckiest year. Our luck has run out. We can no longer ignore the fact that if our aircrews aren’t vigilant in everything they do, a fatality will occur.”
He stressed to the AMC, Air Education and Training Command, and Air National Guard Airmen that everyone “get back to basics” to avoid causing a Class A mishap — a permanent total disability or fatality, damage resulting in $1 million or more or destruction of a Department of Defense aircraft.
“General Roggero’s message scored a home run with our instructor aircrews,” said Lt. Col. Stephen Hajosy, 314th Airlift Wing chief of safety. “As we prepare C-130 crew members destined for combat deployments, this is simply one of the most effective ways to drive home the importance of Operational Risk Management and Crew Resource Management skills essential to survive in today’s complex warfighting environment.”
“We’re in a very tenuous period right now,” said General Roggero. “Crew members are the last link in the chain of events involved in a Class A mishap — events that are often disturbing and preventable. We ask that aircrews review their procedures more thoroughly and use more caution when they step to the airplane.”
As Airmen maintain a high operations tempo at home and abroad, it’s important to remain focused, said the general.
“We’re at a continuously sustained operations tempo that we’ve not experienced before,” said General Roggero. “Our crews are highly experienced fighters in the Global War on Terror, but there’s a possibility of complacency. And we need them to get back to basics and use the training and techniques they’ve learned.”

“Everything depends on airpower, and airpower really depends on air mobility,” he said. “When you look at the intra-theater and inter-theater airlift piece, if we’re going to get there right away and sustain any force at all, you need AMC in the fight.
“We couldn’t conduct or sustain a force anywhere in the world without airlift,” Gen. Roggero said. “The Airmen I’ve met here at Little Rock (AFB) are proud and dedicated to the mission and their part. The C-130 force ... is one of the busiest, most experienced crew forces in AMC and the entire Air Force.”
General Roggero oversees 15 divisions and eight operating locations producing policy, procedures, and lead command guidance to sustain and improve AMC, Mobility Air Forces, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve Command readiness for America’s Global Reach mission.
