TOP STORY >> U.S. Air Force, Canadians work together to improve C-130J maintenance

By Staff Sgt. Jeremy McGuffin
19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The 19th Airlift Wing trained with the Royal Canadian Air Force in a cold weather joint force exercise in Toronto, Canada.

The focus of the training is to improve coordination between both countries’ C-130J experts. During the training event, lasting from Oct. 30 to Nov. 9, 2017, maintenance crews work around-the-clock to ensure aircraft are running smoothly and in the air.

Maintainers need to be ready for any issue that may occur when aircraft malfunction.  Although maintainers can’t foresee every possible issue, they improvise by relying on support and resources from either their home base or from their current location.

“Our biggest challenge has been that our parts kit is very limited,” said Master Sgt. Steve Beiswenger, 19th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron superintendent. “All of the parts that have broken this trip were ones we didn’t have, so we had to call on our Canadian partners for assistance.”

Working with the Royal Canadian Air Force proved invaluable when a critical system failed; possibly removing an aircraft from operations for three days, but was turned into a four-hour repair.

“We had a hydraulic line from the steering system crack,” Beiswenger said. “Since the Canadians didn’t have that specific part, we contacted their fabrication shop and they were able to manufacture the lines based on our technical orders, saving us a lot of downtime.”

The maintenance team here has already faced unique challenges by generating as many aircraft as possible for training with little downtime. This exercise helps them be ready for any deployment conditions.

“The biggest constraint we had at the beginning of the training, but have sorted out now, is being able to work with the Canadians to source the parts we need efficiently,” said 1st Lt. Ryan Landon, 19th Maintenance Group officer in charge of maintenance operations. “We have to be resourceful and think outside of the box to make the mission happen.”

Keeping Combat Airlift airborne 24/7 is what maintenance excels at and it doesn’t matter if it’s training or in a deployed location.

“Wherever the planes go, maintenance follows,” Landon said.

TOP STORY >> Reveille, Retreat time change

By Airman 1st Class Grace Nichols
19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The times for the playing of reveille and retreat over the base giant voice system will change Nov. 10, 2017.

Reveille signals the start of the duty day, and retreat marks the end of the duty day and precedes the playing of the national anthem.

“We are adjusting our bugle calls to match times more commonly seen at other bases,” said Col. Gerald Donohue, 19th Airlift Wing and installation Commander. “In addition, we anticipate it easing traffic flow as the new times avoid peak periods. These calls remind us of our rich military heritage and instill in us a sense of pride and appreciation for that legacy.”

The time changes are as follow:

Revelry: 6:30 a.m., formerly 7 a.m.

Retreat: 5 p.m., formerly 4:30 p.m.

According to AFPAM 34-1202, 14.10.1, because “To the Colors” is played during reveille and the national anthem during retreat, these actions should be taken when the music sounds:

Service members in uniform (including physical training uniform): stop, stand at attention and salute. Those in the process of taking the physical fitness test are exempted from rendering courtesies.

Service members out of uniform or veterans: stop, stand at attention, salute.

Civilians: place right hand, with a hat if wearing one, over their heart.

Personnel in Vehicles: pull over safely and stop for the duration of the music, while sitting respectfully at attention.

“Because it’s a change there will be an adjustment period,” said Tech. Sgt. Tahlia Robinson, 19th Airlift Wing Command Post training NCO in charge. “Remember to be sensitive to others and understand that it’s a work in progress as we continue to honor our flag.”

For more information about the changes, contact the 19th AW Command Post at (501) 987-1900.

TOP STORY >> 314th tail flash displays historical link

By Staff Sgt. Dana J. Cable
19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Team Little Rock will soon start to notice new colors flying in the air and parked on the taxiway as the 314th Airlift Wing has designed a new flash that now officially dons one of its C-130Js.

After more than a year of planning and coordination, a C-130 assigned to the 314th AW now displays a new completed tail flash.

“The 314th AW 75th anniversary was this year and the new tail flash heraldry incorporates unique elements of both the wing’s World War II and Korean War combat airlift history,” said Mark Wilderman, former 314th AW historian.

Two of those unique elements being the Douglas C-47 Skytrain and the C-119 Flying Boxcar aircraft silhouettes on the left side of the tail flash. On the right side are two airdrop parachute silhouettes.

“The two parachutes represent the wing’s primary mission to provide the world’s best combat airlift training, as well as the wing’s primary historical mission of the aerial delivery of combat troops and equipment,” Wilderman said.

The 314th tail flash is trading in the old orange background, and replacing it with blue and yellow, the primary 314th AW colors.

The blue color alludes to the sky, the primary theater of Air Force operations, while yellow denotes the sun and the excellence required of Air Force personnel.

The words “The Rock” are still the forefront of the tail flash, with the addition of a sword in the background.

“The sword symbolizes both the wing’s commitment to the United States defense and our integral role in Air Education and Training Command,” Wilderman said.

The tail flashes will be changed over time whenever an aircraft is due for corrosion control maintenance, according to Tech. Sgt. Adrian Sauceda, 19th Maintenance Squadron NCO in charge of corrosion control.

For this first tail flash the corrosion control flight printed out vinyl stickers to be placed on the tail flash. In the future, they will be painted on.

With the new tail flash design approved, corrosion control Airmen were able to complete the tail flash in a week’s time.

“The guys downstairs busted their butts this week and knocked it out,” Sauceda said. “They didn’t complain once, they just got it done.”

TOP STORY >> Red Ribbon Week: Drug prevention starts with kids

By 2nd Lt. Hunter Rininger
19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

At most Air Force installations, the Drug Demand Reduction program and the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment program are very much separate entities. But here at Little Rock AFB, ADAPT and DDR have teamed up to prevent alcohol and drug abuse amongst service members, their families and the local community.

DDR and ADAPT, the first collaborating teams in the U.S. Air Force, providing prevention and outreach education to base constituents that focus on substance abuse prevention. The ADAPT team focuses on providing the local community with outreach through early drug awareness education. The National Red Ribbon Campaign began in 1985 to provide drug awareness to youth.

“Our goal is to increase our prevention efforts across the Wing in hopes that it will increase the number of self-referrals and decrease the number of substance related incidents that occur each year,” said SSgt Leah Chhoeun, ADAPT Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge here. “Additionally, we hope to increase members’ knowledge of responsible drinking and healthy alternative coping skills.”

This year, LRAFB restored its support in providing drug awareness at Arnold Drive Elementary, Tolleson Elementary and Lawson Elementary. The team serviced over 1,000 students (Pre-K through 5th grade) in the local community. Local ADAPT Counselors, Marine Detachment Substance Abuse Control Officer/Specialists, DDR personnel and 19 SFS K-9 Unit spoke at the schools during Red Ribbon Week.

The team’s efforts have expanded across the Air Force. This year the team developed a prevention model that is currently being used Air Force-wide. The team has managed to double its budget for 2018, which will lead to an expansion of the team’s outreach programs.

As Red Ribbon Week comes to an end, it’s important to remember that the ADAPT and DDR programs at LRAFB are available year-round. The team’s mission is to increase self-identification with any substance abuse issues and their mission can only be accomplished if service members, their families, and the ADAPT/DDR coalition members continue to be mindful of others’ needs.

For more information, contact the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment facility at 501-987-7338. Their office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

TOP STORY >> Crew chief key to combat airlift

By Airman 1st Class Codie Collins
19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Did you know that every C-130J on Little Rock Air Force base has a special key?  This key doesn’t start the plane, it doesn’t open the plane, in fact it has no practical purpose with the plane at all. Yet a select few crew chiefs have the honor of receiving this key where exceptional work is the standard.

Little Rock AFB received a C-130J from Lockheed Martin, and its key was awarded to Senior Airman Julian Santiago, 19th Maintenance Squadron dedicated crew chief, Oct. 19, 2017.

There are currently 28 C-130s assigned to the 19th AW and there is a key for each one. The keys to each individual aircraft are presented to knowledgeable crew chiefs who stand out in their career field. Once a key has been given, no other crew chief will receive a duplicate key to the same aircraft.

“It’s an honor to receive a key,” Santiago said. “I work hard, I but was surprised to be chosen. It’s humbling to be the dedicated crew chief for the last C-130J to come to Little Rock AFB.”

A crew chief must be technically proficient and prove themselves to be a hardworking, dedicated Airman to be eligible to receive a key.

“Santiago sees tasks through to the end and takes pride in his plane,” said Staff Sgt. Jordan Scott, 19th Maintenance Squadron crew chief.

Sweating through the scorching summer heat, bundling up for the winter snow or facing any other element Mother Nature summons, crew chiefs keep Combat Airlift flying through their continuous dedication to their craft.

“Crew chiefs receive the key to the aircraft because we put a lot of hard work into fixing our planes,” Santiago said. “It’s a 24-hour operation to keep the aircraft safe and in the air. Without maintainers, the planes wouldn’t fly.”

Maintaining the C-130J routinely enables Team Little Rock Airmen to perform Combat Airlift by providing quick supply to humanitarian airlift relief to disaster victims and airdrop supplies and troops into the heart of contingency operations in hostile areas.

TOP STORY >> Physical therapy knows your pain

By Maj. Melissa Rose
Physical Therapy Flight commander

Did you know that October was designated as National Physical Therapy Month? This year, Physical Therapists around the nation are using their month to raise awareness about the human toll on the opioid epidemic.

Since 1999, the amount of opioids prescribed per person in the US has tripled, to the point where statistically we could medicate every American continuously for three weeks. Along with this, unintentional overdoses on opioids have also tripled.

Lastly, did you know that if you are Active Duty and on opioids or any class 3 narcotics for more than three months, you will likely have to face an MEB?

Physical Therapy is an amazing tool that can help you overcome pain. Randomized controlled studies have proven that exercise is one of the most effective treatments in overcoming acute and chronic pain.

Also, did you know that as of January 2015, all states have granted Physical Therapy direct access capabilities?  This means that all patients have the capability to seek some level of treatment from a licensed physical therapist without a prescription or referral from a physician.

For Little Rock Air Force Base, the 19th Medical Group Physical Therapy Clinic will evaluate and treat any personnel on active-duty status with a musculoskeletal injury or pain. All you have to do is call our clinic to make an appointment.

We also provide running analysis clinics to all Active Duty, retirees, and dependents. These services are also scheduled at the Physical Therapy clinic.

Finally, we also provide semi-custom insoles for all DoD beneficiaries, you may walk-in for this service, free of charge. Our therapists are skilled in orthopedics, sports medicine, dry needling, and spinal manipulation, to name a few of our specialties.

To learn more, feel free to stop by our clinic and pick up a pamphlet or call 501- 987-7466.
