Retired U.S. Air Force Capt. Kristen Morris has truly overcome the odds. At age 25, she underwent a total hip replacement due to arthritis which destroyed her hip joint. However, she didn’t let that stop her. Once cleared to begin exercising again, Morris dove head first into Vital 90 and rebuilt her hip, body and health – but she didn’t stop there. Morris went a step further and started coaching Vital 90 classes. 

What was the turning point that made you take control of your health?

The turning point that caused me to take charge of my own wellness was when I learned I would be having a full hip replacement at 25. The arthritis was due to several factors, including a previous hip reconstruction, a lifetime of playing high-impact sports, a lack of cartilage in my hip and minor hip dysplasia. My surgeon told me time and time again that if I wanted to be able to function without pain, I would need to take very good care of my new hip post replacement. At around three months post-surgery, I met some incredible people at the Little Rock Air Force Base Fitness Center who supported me. Even though I had a lot of mobility restrictions, I began attending Vital 90 classes and started getting back in shape. I committed myself to a healthy lifestyle and haven’t looked back. 

Tell us about some of the physical obstacles you overcame before you could become a pilot?

I have been in good shape and healthy most of my life because I was always involved in sports. I’ve had several big challenges along the way, and things definitely haven’t always been easy. When I was in college playing Division I soccer, I had both hips reconstructed because my hip joints were slowly slipping out of their sockets. Dealing with that recovery was extremely difficult. I had to motivate myself to go to the gym and to eat healthy, even though I didn’t always feel like it. My goal was to be a pilot. In order to pass my physical, I needed to do some serious work to get my body into shape with my newly reconstructed hips. I didn’t let this significant setback prevent me from reaching my goal. Many people wrote me off, saying I would never be approved to be a pilot. Well, after a year and a half of hard work, I proved them wrong and received my pilot slot. Roughly six years later, one of my hips began giving out and I needed it completely replaced. The Vital 90 class – specifically the expertise of the coaches – really helped me come back after this tough surgery. Their knowledge, dedication and willingness to help me really made a big difference. Since I was no longer allowed to participate in high-impact activities the Vital 90 instructors modified all the workouts so I could still participate, even with my significant limitations. 

As a result of your hip problems, what are some of the most significant changes you’ve made to your fitness routine?

The biggest change I made to my fitness routine was learning how to modify exercises. Since I needed to eliminate any high-impact activities, I had to find a way to stay in shape and get a workout without causing further pain and injury to my body. Every exercise has a modification, and once you learn what body part an exercise is supposed to work, you come up with alternatives that still work that particular body part.

What is the most important fitness lesson you’ve learned so far?

The most important fitness lesson is also an important life lesson. I’ve learned I can do anything I set my mind to. Getting in shape doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a lot of work, but don’t give up! Don’t let the distractions distract you.

Which is most important when tackling fitness, the physical or mental battle?

Personally, I think it’s all a mental battle. Our bodies are far more capable than we know. They are only limited by our minds. It’s that decision to go to the gym or not; to push yourself hard or to lackadaisically go through your workout; to make the healthy snack choice or pick the cupcake because it’s sitting there. It all boils down to mental fortitude. If you aren’t mentally strong today, keep working at it and you will get there!

Do you have a favorite training method?

My favorite training method is HIIT, or (High Intensity Interval Training. I like it for two primary reasons: 1. It’s constantly varied therefore always interesting. I never find myself getting bored. 

2. Every workout is a competition against myself. I am always pushing myself to be better than I was before.

Do you have a diet strategy? Explain?

My diet strategy is very simple: if I can kill it or grow it, then I will eat it. I have a big sweet tooth so I keep that in check by letting myself occasionally have treats and in small portions.

What is the most significant thing you’ve changed about your diet?

The most significant change I have made to my diet is being mindful of what I’m eating. I make sure I am eating because I am hungry, not bored. When I eat, I focus on how good my food is rather than eating it so fast that I barely taste it.

What advice do you have for Airmen (or dependents) who are struggling with their fitness assessment and weight?

My advice is to start today. Don’t wait until tomorrow or next week. Decide to start making healthier choices right now. Take it one decision at a time, and when you make a few poor decisions – because you will – don’t let it start a downward spiral. Instead, make that next decision a healthy one. Nobody is perfect.

What is your favorite part about coaching Vital 90?

I enjoy coaching Vital 90 because I love making a difference in people’s lives. Through Vital 90 I can help people achieve their fitness goals. I love interacting with everyone that comes to class because it’s a very lively atmosphere with a bunch of fun individuals. Vital 90 is a fitness class designed to help people get into better shape regardless of where they are today. To me, it doesn’t get any better than that!

Little Rock Air Force Base partnered with the 82nd Airborne Division for a Joint Operational Access Exercise Sept. 27 through Oct. 3 at Pope Army Airfield, North Carolina. 

Although much of the focus of the joint exercise was on the multiple jumps and follow-on ground operations, the main objective is to validate the 82nd AD’s ability to conduct a joint forcible entry which is a real-world response of inserting an airborne task force brigade or larger unit into an area and be used as defense for the United States.

During the first week, the 41st and 61st Airlift Squadrons, the 62nd Airlift Wing flew together in an eight-ship formation of five C-130J Hercules and three C-17 Globemaster IIIs. During these formation flights, members of 82nd AD will conduct multiple proficiency jumps. 

The 317th Airlift Group from Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, will join the last night of the exercise and contribute a C-130 to create a nine-ship formation. Together, the aircraft will insert 627 paratroopers and their equipment over Alexandria, Louisiana, for follow-on ground operations maneuvers and training.  

The complexity of this exercise allows members from the 19th AW the opportunity to practice coordinating air operations and conduct airdrop training. 

“The experience we get participating in the JOAX is invaluable,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Ryan Wells, lead Air Force JOAX coordinator. “It gives us the opportunity to further hone our mission planning skills, our communication skills with the Army and our airlift skills.”

Maintainers from the 19th Maintenance Group played a vital role in the JOAX as they were able to fix, maintain and prepare aircraft to successfully launch and conduct air operations. In addition to providing this essential maintenance for the fleet, approximately 40 aircraft maintainers also received valuable training.

“Being involved in JOAX and other exercises like this allows our maintainers more chances to prepare for deployment taskings while maintaining personnel readiness,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Scott Yancey, 19th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron maintenance operations officer. “It’s always better when we’re on the road and having to put our training into realistic practice as opposed to continually training to one standard while at home station.”

Exercises such as JOAX allow the two 19th AW flying squadrons to plan and coordinate air operations support for complex joint endeavors, which both strengthens the relations between the Air Force and Army as well as creates a larger knowledge base in order to quickly and concisely react to real-world threats.  

“This is something we don’t get to practice very often, especially the interoperability between us and the Army,” Wells said. “The more we practice, the more experience we have to ensure we’re conducting exercises as efficiently as possible for a higher success rate. For real-world responses, we have zero room for error.”

With the demands of a busy lifestyle, there are times when proper nutrition is unintentionally neglected. 

Service members at times choose to replace poor dietary habits or increase an already healthy lifestyle with supplements. Though supplements are legal, service members should educate themselves on which are and are not approved. 

“Supplements aren’t food and they’re not drugs, so this is a gray area,” said Jill Hinsley, 19th Aerospace Medicine Squadron registered dietician. “Since the Food and Drug Administration doesn’t regulate supplements, the responsibility falls on the consumer to determine whether it is safe for use.”

The DOD does not maintain a list of dietary supplements or supplement ingredients that are banned. If the FDA or the Drug Enforcement Administration hasn’t declared an ingredient or dietary supplement product illegal, then the DOD does not consider it to be illegal. 

Luckily, there is an initiative in place to aid with making an informed decision about choosing a supplement. 

“Operation Supplement Safety is a joint initiative with the Human Performance Resource Center and DOD to provide U.S. service members with supplement safety information,” Hinsley said.

Although there isn’t an official list of banned supplements, below is a list of substances service members cannot legally consume.

• Anything on the DEA’s controlled substance list such as amphetamines or anabolic steroids,

• Any substance the FDA has declared illegal for use in dietary supplements such as ephedrine alkaloids, DMAA, DMBA and BMPEA,

• Any prescription drug without a current prescription, and

• Salvia divinorum

For Airmen looking to add supplements to their diet, it’s highly recommended to conduct research. 

“People have to do their research since the industry is so loosely regulated,” Hinsley said. “Especially, if they’re entertaining using some of the higher risk supplements.”

Team Little Rock Airmen who live in the dormitories gathered together to learn the fundamentals of cooking during a unique class held Sept. 14 at the Crossroads Café on Little Rock Air Force Base. 

The dorm council is an organization made for Airmen to address their concerns and ideas on improving dormitory quality of life. 

“The purpose of the class is to provide our Airmen an opportunity to grow and give them the knowledge on how to prepare meals in the future,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Noah Villanueva, 19th Force Support Squadron dormitory management superintendent. 

The brainchild of Villanueva and the dorm council was taught by Jill Hinsley, a 19th Medical Group dietician. 

Before the cooking began, Hinsley briefed the Airmen on food care and rules to follow in the kitchen. She also stressed the importance of hygiene when preparing a meal. 

“We can make all this great food but if you get somebody sick, it’s not going to be fun,” Hinsley said. 

Airmen were given the opportunity to participate in cooking meals – all of which were made in a microwave. Dishes included chili, an omelet and steamed broccoli. 

“The cooking class is a great example of Airmen expressing their interests and desires to dorm leadership and actions being taken to implement their ideas in a fun and educational way,” said U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Bryce Baker, 19th Operation Support Squadron air traffic controller. 

The knowledge Airmen learned in the class can be applied to both easy meals and healthy choices. 

“A plate full of colorful vegetables and fruit including about a palm-sized portion of quality protein every meal is one of the keys to good nutrition,” Hinsley said. 

“It feels good to know that there are people who care about your health,” said U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Joseph Harris, 19th Logistics Readiness Squadron vehicle maintenance apprentice. “I can honestly say I learned more today about cooking than I have throughout my life.”

This year marks the 15th Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. For some, it also marks a reason to serve their country and honor those who lost their lives. U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Michael Kumiyama, 19th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron career assistance advisor, is one of those people. 

As an aircraft maintainer by trade, Kumiyama, who has served as an active-duty service member for 15 years, goes above and beyond to give back to his peers, co-workers and community. 

“I’ve absolutely loved serving in the military,” said Kumiyama. “I’m third generation military. It’s what the Kumiyamas do: we serve our country.”

Kumiyama is currently involved in the Top 3, a privatized organization on base; Fleet Feet, a local running store that he trains with; and Team Red, White and Blue, a national non-profit organization for veterans.

“The main purpose of Team Red, White and Blue is to get people together,” he said. “We want to get them out of isolation and get them involved with people who care about them and want to help them be a part of the community.” 

Kumiyama initially got involved with Team Red, White and Blue a couple years ago through an old supervisor. However, he did not realize the effect it would have on him until he decided to run the Air Force marathon in 2015. 

Team Red White and Blue’s chapter in Dayton, Ohio, hosted a pre-race dinner and social for those running the marathon. It was there Kumiyama connected with people from all over the world. He was able to run the race the next day knowing everyone was encouraging each other to do the best they could. 

The site he saw that day – with people running with the American Flag or wearing the logo of Team Red, White and Blue as well as the connections made – is what made him really want to be involved.  

“The people I have had the opportunity to meet and to impact their lives as well as for them to impact my life is why I continue to stay connected,” Kumiyama said. “We need people. People need each other – whether it’s going out for a run or bike ride – the connection is the biggest thing.”

For the anniversary of 9/11, Kumiyama, together with Team Red, White and Blue, wanted to give back and honor those lives that were lost 15 years ago. The group hosted a 7-mile memorial run that started and ended at the Arkansas State Capitol Building Sept. 11, 2016.

The group ran carrying the American and POW/MIA flag, stopping at each mile to read a dedication card about the seven fallen Arkansans who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks.  

“We just wanted to show our respect to them,” Kumiyama said. “We want to do our best to thank them and honor them for giving their lives.”

As the cornerstone of C-130 combat airlift, the 314th Airlift Wing touches all corners of the globe, training Airmen and international service members to become premier combat airlifters.

Nations from around the world send their C-130J and H model aircrews to the C-130 Center of Excellence, an international C-130 training school, where students learn career-specific fundamentals of combat airlift.

“We train international students in all aircrew positions including pilots, loadmasters and of course aircraft maintainers,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Larry Holland, 714th Training Squadron NCO in charge of the International Military Student Office.

Since the wing’s transition to the J model, the 314th AW works hand-in-hand with the 189th Airlift Wing to train the international C-130H students. Annually, they educate and train 100 to 200 international students from more than 47 allied nations.  

“(Length of training) varies year-to-year depending on the requirement,” Holland said. “While our first priority is training our Airmen, with more countries buying the C-130J, the airframe is growing and we keep stepping forward.”

International students receive a curriculum tailored to their career field’s needs. Classes swap from one week in length for a refresher course, to eight months for initial training. 

“For the most part, the students train in our aircrafts and on the flight simulator. Just like our U.S. students — we are able to send them out of here fully trained,” said Holland.

For some students, visiting a foreign country can be an exciting yet intimidating experience. That is why the IMSO works to establish lasting relationships and immerses students in American culture on a personal level.

“The IMSO team works to make sure students have all the support they need so when they come here, they can focus on getting the training their countries need and that we can provide,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Jonathon Ferricher, 714th TRS officer in charge of the IMSO.

The students have an opportunity to participate in the Field Studies Program managed by the IMSO team. The program allows for voluntary visits to sites such as Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Memphis, Tennessee.

“The impact we have on them is further reaching then the tactical airlift expertise that we train them on,” Ferricher said. “We also teach them about American culture and what our society is like. I think that’s valuable because it helps them to understand America, and it leaves a lasting impression as they go back to their countries.

“Where else could you take 15 to 20 students from 10 to 12 different countries out for a weekend and show them good old fashion American culture?” Ferricher said. 

“So far, I’ve learned about the multicultural nature of American society,” said a student from the Nigerian air force. “America is filled with different people of different races with an admirable love for one country. It teaches me that brotherhood and unity is not born solely from similarities in race or language, but also from the idea of oneness as is embodied by the American spirit.”

The wing trains more than 1,300 students, annually, including approximately 200 international students, making it the largest international flight training program.

“As an integrated coalition force doing a common mission, together we can get so much more accomplished than trying to do things on our own,” Ferricher said. “That is the main objective here: building partnerships.”

Little Rock Air Force Base is hosting the 2016 Arkansas Military Expo Sept. 17, 2016. The base will open its gates to the public from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and showcase military capabilities to spectators. 

Little Rock AFB partnered with local communities and other Arkansas military organizations to bring the event to the public. 

“Coordinating the expo has been a total team effort with the 19th Airlift Wing, 314th Airlift Wing, 189th Airlift Wing and 913th Airlift Group,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Julie Honeycutt, the 2016 Arkansas Expo organizer. “We’ve also coordinated with the Arkansas Army National Guard as well as units from Fort Smith and Camp Robinson.”

The expo will feature a variety of events such as flybys and static displays of aircraft including the MQ-9 Reaper, T-6A Texan II, C-130H and J Hercules as well as historical “warbirds” such as the AT-6, PT-17, CJ-6 and P-51. 

Installation and local authorities are teaming together to ensure the spectators have a safe and enjoyable experience. 

“Safety is our top priority,” Honeycutt said. “The 19th Security Forces Squadron, the fire department and emergency management team are coordinating with our partners off base to ensure security and to make sure everyone is having a good time.”

Community members have played a vital role in composing the expo. Events such as the Arkansas Military Expo highlight the strong bond between the military and its surrounding communities.

 “It’s a very good partnership,” said DannaKay Duggar, Jacksonville Museum of Military History director. “We get huge support from the base. Little Rock Airmen have been very helpful with projects we have had here, like the annual Welcome Home Vietnam Vets event.” 

Although many will be there to witness Combat Airlift, the expo also serves as an opportunity for the community to see the impact of their partnerships with the base.

“It’s awesome to see how involved a community is and how supportive they are,” Honeycutt said. “Military members throughout Arkansas are supported by their local communities and this event is an opportunity to show the community what their neighbors do each and every day.”

The free family-friendly Arkansas Military Expo is coming to Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark. scheduled for Sept. 17, 2016. Team Little Rock will be opening its gates to welcome community partners on the anniversary of the U.S Air Force.

“We are going to bring all facets of our military, our reservists, our citizen soldiers, our Guardsmen, our active duty,

our civilians and our contractors and showcase what they bring to the fight on behalf of the state of Arkansas and the nation each and every day,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Charles Brown, 19th Airlift Wing commander.

The event will include festivities such as aircraft demonstrations, static displays, a C-130J cargo drop demonstration, and multiple vendors.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the Vandenberg Gate opening at 9 a.m.

Aerial Events

C-130

The C-130 is a cargo aircraft capable of operating from rough, dirt strips and is the prime transport for airdropping troops and equipment into hostile areas. The C-130 can accommodate a wide variety of oversized cargo, including everything from utility helicopters and six-wheeled armored vehicles to standard palletized cargo and military personnel.

C-17 Globemaster III

The C-17 Globemaster III is the newest, most flexible cargo aircraft to enter the airlift force. The C-17 is capable of rapid strategic delivery of troops and all types of cargo to main operating bases or directly to forward bases in the deployment area. The aircraft can perform tactical airlift and airdrop missions and can transport litters and ambulatory patients during aeromedical evacuations when required. T-6 The T-6 is fully aerobatic and features a pressurized cockpit with an anti-G system, ejection seat and an advanced avionics package with sunlight-readable liquid crystal displays.

Warbirds

Warbirds are retired military aircraft that have been restored to flying condition.

MQ-1B Predator

The MQ-1 is an armed, multi-mission, medium-altitude, long-endurance remotely piloted aircraft that is employed primarily as an intelligence-collection asset and secondarily against dynamic execution targets.

In addition to the wide-array of aircraft on display, there will be other events and activities including bouncy castles and static displays, providing fun for the whole family.

“This surrounding community has built this base,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Christopher Bennett, 19th AW vice commander. “Doing things like the Arkansas Military Expo this fall is just one little way we can say thank you and communicate how much we value that partnership just a little bit more.”

19th Security Forces Squadron

The 19th Security Forces Squadron is ramping up for the upcoming Arkansas Military Expo. Although this is a major undertaking for the installation, security forces wants to reassure the base populace that while the base is being opened to the public for this event, the security for those who live and work on base remains a top priority. There will be a robust presence on the installation to handle any potential expo incidents as well as routine calls.

Please remember that security is not only a responsibility of the 19th SFS Defenders. They rely on everyone to remain vigilant and notify security forces immediately if something does not seem right or if they notice criminal or otherwise suspicious activity. Each person on base is a vital part of the integrated defense of the installation which helps mitigate potential risks and defeat adversarial threats. 

In particular, during the expo, be watchful for suspicious activity. If you see something, say something. Find a 19th SFS Defender or civilian police officer on patrol and brief them immediately. Also, if a child wanders off or becomes separated from his or her family, there is a Missing Child Tent the child can be taken to or any law enforcement personnel on the base can assist. The Missing Child tent will be on the flightline side of Hangar 250, near the misting tent and K9 demonstration area.

As a reminder, the Vandenberg Gate is open only for guests (non-Department of Defense card holders). People on base will not be able to exit Vandenberg Gate from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. All base personnel should use the Arnold Gate or the Harris Gate for both entry and exit of the installation.
